The Hamlet of Wheatley Heights is a distinct and richly diverse Long Island community. You will soon discover the pride taken in our well maintained properties, top rated schools and quiet suburban lifestyle. The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights/Dix Hills is committed to maintaining a high quality of living in the Hamlet of Wheatley Heights by steadfastly defending the interests of our residents.

If you are a resident but you are not a member of the Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights/Dix Hills Civic Association, Inc., we urge you to seriously consider membership. At a cost of only $20 per year, membership is worth far more than dollars can measure.

We have included information on our civic association, community and schools along with important contact information regarding our local government representatives. You will also find helpful information on regional and emergency services, our neighborhood watch program, parks & recreation and information on how to contact executive board members of The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights/Dix Hills Civic Association.

History and Organization Achievements

The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights / Dix Hills, Inc. has championed the cause of our community for more than 25 years. We were originally known as the Concerned Parents of Wheatley Heights, when neighbors joined together to save Taukomas Elementary School from closing. We were not successful because we were not incorporated. We found ourselves involved in many quality of life issues from poor street lighting to racial steering by real estate agencies. These concerted, organized efforts created a lasting network of caring friends and concerned, taxpaying citizens. Those previously uninvolved became involved. Together, people in our community expressed the needs of the neighborhood.... We were determined to take control of our community's character and its future.

In 1980, we officially became the Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights and soon established ourselves as the voice of the Wheatley Heights community. We were incorporated in 1984 and in 1993, we added the name Dix Hills because residents residing in the town of Babylon with Dix Hills addresses had no organization to speak for them. Wheatley Heights is a unique community surrounded by Wyandanch, Deer Park, and Dix Hills. Our School district is Half Hollow Hills.  Currently we share our postal zip code with Wyandanch, as well as our fire and ambulance services. At present, one of our key campaigns is aimed at establishing a separate zip code designation for Wheatley Heights.

Here are some notable highlights and accomplishments of The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights / Dix Hills, Inc.:

• Successfully negotiated with Babylon Town Supervisor to include in the Schaffer/Brown resolution a ban on Pinelawn Cemetery's sand mining in our community. Later stopped sand mining a Camp Kaufman. (Have consistently received the cooperation and support of every Town Administration since 1980)
• Responsible for designation of Wheatley Heights on the Long Island Expressway as well as local listings with LIPA and telephone companies. 
• Worked with local authorities to have known drug houses closed down.
• Responsible for bringing handicapped access to Wheatley Hollow Shopping Center.
• Succeeded in blocking multiple housing permits on Burrs Lane, Circle Drive. Reported absentee landlords to Town authorities.
• Currently expanded efforts and joining other local citizen groups as watchdogs for Republic Airport, focusing on noise abatement, flight patterns, and limiting expansion.
• Have reported on racial steering in our community.
• Established a Beautification Program, which has already achieved numerous separate successes.

  • Upgrade and physical maintenance of Hermann Griem Park
  • Notifying in writing property owners of offensively unkempt properties and the removal of abandoned cars.
• Instituted Neighborhood Watch Program. Succeeded in numerous meetings with police department to encourage added police protection, more frequent patrols, improved 911 response, and better intervention with local illegal drug dealings. Also won night security patrols for Hermann Griem Park and Kevin Ver Pault Park.  Instituted Neighborhood Watch patrols.
• Continue to work closely with the Half Hollow Hills School District on community-impacting issues, especially re-districting conflicts (1999 most recently).
• Successfully pushed for law enforcement on illegally parked commercial trucks in residential areas.
• Hold open community (Quarterly) meetings at the VFW Hall, and provide guest presenters and speakers including Police Chief, Superintendent of Highways, State Assemblyman, State Senator, Town Planner(s), Superintendent of schools; as well as representatives of local business, the Post Office, Keyspan/LIPA, the Fire Department, Ambulance Corps, and many others.
• Traffic improvements: Won Traffic flow changes and traffic light installation at Brown Blvd. and Main Ave. Responsible for $3.5 million drainage project on Straight Path. Won ban on truck traffic on Straight Path (Huntington on Babylon) Successfully petitioned/obtained new traffic light in front of Paumonok School.
• Successfully prevented down zoning application for a major development project at a special ground water protection area.
